Global Information: Currency Conversion
Traveller's cheques are very popular now amongst all types of travellers. You can buy the required amount in your own currency and exchange it at your final destination, either upon arrival at the airport or in a local bank or foreign exchange. Some countries may prefer to deal only in US Dollar travellers cheques. In this instance you will need to purchase traveller's cheques in US Dollar denominations and then exchange them again for local currency at the final destination. Travellers cheques are a fairly safe form of currency to travel with as they are numbered and can usually be refunded if they are lost or stolen.

Credit cards are another popular source of obtaining foreign currency abroad and they can be used to purchase goods in many (but not all) countries. The credit card will be swiped and then the amount in the given foreign currency plus any commission your card issuer may impose will be invoiced to you with your next bill once the amount has been converted over.

Cash is both a convenient and inconvenient form of exchanging currency. It is convenient because it is instantly exchangeable. It is perhaps inconvenient because there is little or no comeback if it is lost or stolen. People travelling with large amounts of cash leave themselves vulnerable and open to robbery. Some establishments in certain countries actually prefer to accept US Dollars over the local currency because US Dollars are highly coveted across the globe.
