Global Information: Landscape
The earth's landscape is shaped by the natural features of rock, valleys, deserts (and sand) and soil. Its shape and form are constantly evolving as time takes its toll on the earth's surface. The element of wind carries sand over vast distances and the seas and rivers of our world are continually shaping the land and coastlines they overlap.

Most of the world's water lies deep within its oceans and just 2% of total world water is located inland in either rivers or lakes. Rivers carry vast deposits of soil and in cases like the mouths of the Mekong river in Vietnam, land is on the increase as soil shifted along by the river mounts up at the river's delta.

Gullies appear in parts of the world where the soil is thin and the rainwater is not easily absorbed by it. The water makes its way downhill, shifting and eroding the soil very quickly. Landslides are extreme examples of what happens to a gully when a mass of water has an impact on it. Rocks become brittle and crumble all at once, causing a mass slide of the top section of rock and soil debris downhill. Ice can create huge glaciers over time if temperatures are low enough. As long as 18,000 years ago, the Ice Age was in existence and covered three times the amount of the world's surface than in modern times. Glaciers actually occur when snow is compacted into ice flows. They transport huge quantities of rocks and deposit them eventually into seas or rivers. When glaciers disappear they often leave valleys and huge indents in the earth's surface. Deserts are constantly changing as the wind erodes their surface and pulls fine particles of sand over large areas, creating beautiful sand dune patterns. The lines of a sand dune will always run perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction.
