Global Information: Maps
Maps exist in order to provide us with the information we need about the earth's surface including its natural features such as mountains, rivers, elevations, seas and deserts, as well as man-made features like roads and railways. They can be used as a tool to navigate from A to B and also as a source of information to learn more about the geographical elements of our world. Maps are always designed to scale and follow the same format universally. A map will always read from north to south the right way up.

Travel maps are either topographic or thematic and sometimes a mixture of both. A topographic map will illustrate physical elements, differences in terrain, the courses of rivers, the locations of seas, forests, as well as different types of road and railway lines. Areas of different elevations are normally represented by contour lines on a topographic map with the distance between the lines determining the gradient of the elevation. Thematic maps are simpler than topographic maps as they do not attempt to illustrate nearly as many features. They are designed for tourists that require simple maps to navigate a particular journey. They tend to show only major roads and illustrate particular points of general interest in an area.
