Global Information: Natural Disasters
Natural disasters come in many forms and affect civilisation in one way or another whether it likes it or not. Common are earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, floods, droughts, avalanches and tropical storms. Volcanoes are most prominent in the Indonesian archipelago, Pacific Rim, South America and The west coast of the USA. Parts of Europe also experience volcanic activity and also East Africa. The US city of San Francisco lies on the San Andreas fault and is subject to a heavy earthquake around once every ten years. Buildings have been especially designed to withstand the force of impact that earthquakes inflict upon the city.

Tropical storms reek havoc during the rainy seasons of the tropics. These storms are extremely destructive and often tear away all that appears in their path. Household storm names include hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones and typhoons. Much of North Africa is subject to locust storms during dry periods. These insects destroy crops and have a devastating impact on agriculture within areas that can barley grow enough food to support themselves. Unnatural disasters are those in which man has been at fault in some form or another.

The Chernobyl disaster occurred on the 26th of April 1986 and was one of the worst unnatural disasters of all time. A nuclear reactor exploded in the nuclear factory at Chernobyl, spilling almost nine tonnes of radiation into the earth's atmosphere. The fallout area was huge and included 23% of the Belarus landmass and 7.5% of the Ukraine. Prypyat is now a ghost city as it was evacuated as a result of the explosion.
