Global Information: Population
The population of our world is continually on the rise and is expected to reach 10 billion by the year 2025. At present the population stands at 5.51 billion. Most people live along the coastal regions of the world and along the earth's river valleys. Although 20% of the earth is occupied by desert, just 5% of the total world population lives within these inhospitable areas. The majority of the world's population lives within heavily industrialised regions that provide jobs for people to earn money and eventually feed themselves.

World population can be influenced by many factors. Improvements in food supplies and medicine mean certain rises in numbers. Good nutrition and standards of public health also prolong life. Many third world countries have high infant mortality rates, which in turn have a knock-on effect on the overall population.

The world's most populous country is China with 1.2 billion people. India comes close second with 1 billion. The world's least populated country is the Vatican City, which houses just 1000 people. The most densely populated country is Monaco with 15,900 people per square kilometer. The most sparsely populated countries are Australia, Mongolia and Mauritania with just 2 people per square kilometer each.
