Global Information: Rivers
Rivers form an integral part of the irrigation of the world's land and also provide the water of life for many civilisations and also the means to transport goods from A to B and generate energy. Most of the world's population lives along the coastal regions of the world and along the earth's river valleys.

The longest river in the world is the Nile in Africa, measuring 6671 km. In second place is the Amazon of South America at 6400 km. The Yangtze of China comes in third at a length of 6300 km. The fourth longest is the Mississippi at a length of 6019 km. The Congo river is the second longest in Africa at a length of 4700 km. The greatest and mightiest example of a river on earth is the Amazon River of South America.

Although it is not as long as the Nile, the Amazon surpasses in terms of the volume of the water it contains as well as the immense size of its drainage basin. Around one fifth of the earth's flowing water is pushed along by the Amazon River. The mouth or delta of the Amazon expels 174900 cubic meters of water per second. That's 4.5 times greater than the Congo river and 10 times more than the Mississippi. In fact the Amazon river covers over a third of the entire South American continent. The size of this huge drainage basin is an overwhelming 6,915,000 sq km. At it's deepest, the Amazon is 45m although depths of 90m are estimated to exist in parts of the Amazon delta.
