Global Information: Time
GMT or Greenwich Mean Time is internationally recognised as being the calculus and measurement of solar time since 1884. The centre of the GMT zone is the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. The Meridian line is an imaginary line that lies at 0 latitude, running from the North to the South Pole via Greenwich. World time is measured from this Meridian. The world is divided into 24 different time zones, 15 degrees apart, either behind or in front of GMT. The zones are measured in accordance and relation to the earth's rotation around the sun. West of Greenwich means that the time is before GMT, east of Greenwich means that the time is ahead of GMT. For example, when it is noon in London, it is 8am in New York and 7pm in Bangkok. The continent of Antarctica and Graham Land are the only known world regions that are not subject to a time zone.

Daylight Saving Time or DST is a system of advancing or delaying the clock in order to extend the day during times of later daylight hours. It is adopted by many countries throughout the world and was first introduced in WWI to cut down on artificial heating needs. Daylight saving normally means adding an hour to the clock in Springtime and subtracting an hour in the Autumn.

The International Date Line dissects the Pacific Ocean and most of Oceania, running again from the North to the South Pole down the 180 latitude. This date line marks the point between calendar days. If you travelled east of the line, you'd lose a day, if you travelled west of the line you would gain a day. The function of the International Date Line is to compensate for the time zones of the world.
