India forms most of what is known as the Indian sub-continent that stretches from Pakistan, across to Myanmar and down as far south as the island of Sri Lanka. Due to the size of the country, India has many different types of weather. It may be freezing in the mountains of the Himalayas, and at the same time, extremely hot on the dry arid plains. With a total area of 3,287,590 sq km, India has many different types of terrain. The mighty Himalayan range that spans nearly the whole of the northern end of the country is without a doubt, the largest mountain range in the world. Among its many mountains are Everest in Nepal and K2 in Pakistan. India is divided into many different states. In the south, Kerala is famous for its tropical backwaters and Goa for its beaches. For many, the highlight of India is a visit to the Taj Mahal, the world's most famous mausoleum.

The population of India is 1,045,845,226 and 25% of this figure lives below the poverty line. India has many languages but the most widely spoken is Hindi. The national unit of currency is the Rupee.

India's economy is comprised of both traditional farming and large-scale commercial industry and service. Over 60% of the population works within agriculture, producing rice, wheat, oilseed, cotton, jute, tea, sugarcane and potatoes. India's main industries are textiles, chemicals, food processing, steel, transportation equipment and cement. The largest export partner is the USA. The railway network of India is world famous and was constructed largely by the British. The total track length measures 63,693 km.

In the south of India, a tropical climate prevails. The north receives a temperate climate. The monsoons appear in May and by June, most of India is affected by these torrential rains. The Rajasthan region receives a dry desert climate. The highest recorded temperature in Delhi was 46C.
