Regional Information Regional Information: Europe: The Baltic States

The Baltic States are located in Northeast Europe and include the ex-Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They look out across the Baltic Sea to Scandinavia in the north and border Belarus, Poland and Russia to the south, west and east respectively. All of these nations declared independence from the Soviet Union in the early nineties and have since strived to reinstate their own unique customs and languages. The terrain of the Baltic States is comprised of relatively low-lying elevations of plains, woodlands and marshes, aside from the Vidzeme Uplands in Latvia. The highest point of elevation is Suur Munamagi in Estonia at a height of 318m. Other natural features include the Western Dvina River, Lake Peipus and the Gulf of Riga. The transport network of the Baltic States consists of 11,016 km of railways and 391,630 km of highways.
