Regional Information Regional Information: Europe: The Low Countries

The Low Countries, also known as Benelux are located within Northwestern Europe and face the North Sea in the North, border France in the west and south, and Germany in the east. The total landmass is 66,699 sq km and is representative of the countries Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The terrain is a mostly low-lying series of fertile plains, apart form the hilly Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg. Other natural features include the Mass and Meuse rivers and the stunning Polders of the Netherlands, which are essentially areas of land that have been reclaimed from the sea by man. Much of the Netherlands lies below sea level and is subject to flooding, although a complex series of canals and dykes ensures at least temporary flood immunity.
