Touring: Backpacking Travel
Backpacking can be the most, fun, interesting, mind expanding, exhilirating cheapest and rewarding form of travel around. If all goes wrong, and it potentially can, then there is very little to fall back on because unlike going on a package tour, the services of a holiday rep are not included. This is why it is so important to purchase an adequate insurance policy before leaving home to cover any potential mishaps. The type of things that can go wrong are arrest, personal accident, loss theft or damage to personal property.

Visiting a nurse prior to departure is a sensible thing to do as they will be able to inform you as to which immunizations are necessary for your chosen destination. It is wise to allow 6 months prior to departure for the arrangement of these. Backpacking is potentially the most interesting form of travel as you get to meet all types of people from various different walks of life. It is possible to make friends from other countries and stay in touch via email once the trip is over. You can sometimes find other people who are traveling your way that will share accommodation and other things like helpful advice.

Because backpacking involves having no ties or set plans, the freedom aspect of this type of travel is fantastic. If a place doesn't impress you or you'd rather be somewhere else, there is nothing to stop you from leaving straight away. Unlike package tours where you are tied down to accommodation and even meal times, with backpacking you can literally do what you want. It is also a very cheap way to travel.

As far as kit goes, it is always best to pack your bag or backpack as light as possible because you will be the person responsible for carrying it around. Travelling during wintertime is an exception to this rule as more layers are needed from day to day. A good first aid kit is invaluable as it will allow you to tend to any minor injuries on the spot. A torch is another useful object, as is a decent combination knife. A padlock enables you to lock things in hostel lockers although wire mesh around the backpack will enable you to secure your luggage to something solid if lockers are not provided. A sheet sleeping bag can be made by sewing a double flat sheet together.

Spraying the sheet with insect repellent before bedtime will help to reduce the possibility of being infected. It's important to spray repellent on your body if venturing out after sunset as insects are at their most active after sundown, especially mosquitoes. Trek towels are the best option of body-drying device available to a backpacker as they are light, don't take up much space in a bag and dry much quicker than conventional towels.

Good guidebooks are a great source of information for how to get from A to B, where to stay, where to eat and what to see and do. Before leaving home it is wise to find out about whether or not your travel destination requires you to have a visa.
