Touring: Dangers & Annoyances
Danger and annoyance need not hinder travel but it is probably best to be aware of danger, rather than have bad experiences. Theft is the most common annoyance when travelling, yet preventative steps and common sense can reduce the chances of being relieved of your possessions. Thieves usually congregate around tourist areas and rely on people's senses being not very astute. Important documents such as flight tickets, passport and insurance should never be left unattended in a hotel room. A good tip nowadays is to scan all important documents and email them to a roaming email account. That way if they go astray, they can be accessed from any internet location.

It goes without saying that money and travellers cheques should also be safeguarded, although to some extent travellers cheques can more often than not be replaced. Some thieves have a habit of offering strangers a drink, laced with drugs. In light of this it is always best to err on the side of caution when offered something as a gesture from somebody you don't know. Thefts have also occurred from bags stowed away in the overhead storage holds in aircraft cabins on overnight flights and likewise on overnight train journeys. In order to claim from an insurance company for loss, you need to obtain a police report.

Drugs are a danger to travellers, even if not consumed. It is best to pack your own bag and not let it out of your sight until it is checked-in at the port of departure. Failure to do this could result in an opportunity for drugs or similar to be planted in your luggage. You would be liable to prosecution and possibly the death penalty in some countries if drugs are found on your possession.
