Touring: Flights
Air travel improved dramatically towards the end of the last century and there are now a multitude of airlines in existence, ready to transport you across the globe to whichever corner you prefer. National airlines carry passengers to a range of long haul destinations via the capital city or major airport of that nation. As more people have opted to travel long distance for exotic holidays, airlines have been forced to reduce many of their fares for fear of being undercut by competitors. Sometimes you can obtain a lower fare by booking through the chosen airline direct although it can be better to book through a consolidated travel agent as they have access to a range of different fares and can compare them for you before you make your choice.

First Class fares are always the most expensive without exception although admittedly you certainly get what you pay for. Tickets are usually fully refundable and can be amended without fee. Besides these benefits, First class is always more comfortable with more leg room, better food, more comfortable departure lounge facilities and a heavier luggage allowance. APEX fares are advance purchase tickets that offer up to 60% reduction off the standard price. Tickets normally need to be booked several days or even months in advance and usually need to be paid for in full at the time of booking. There is usually no amendment or refund available on an APEX ticket. Economy fares meet First Class and APEX somewhere in between, often allowing an amendment for a nominal fee with cancellation usually just amounting to a loss of the original deposit. At present it is possible to get very low fares with low cost or budget airlines. These companies have very low overheads as in-flight meals are never included, travel is ticketless, travel is non-amendable and non-refundable. Low cost airlines often fly to obscure airports, further away from the city than the more expensive alternative air transport hubs.

Selecting an airfare that suits you need not be a stressful affair. Try looking for an airline's punctuality record to see what your chances are of being delayed or your luggage going astray. See what their safety record is like as well. This is a particularly important factor for those who are naturally afraid of flying in the first instance. Choose an airline that flies in and out of convenient airports that won't leave you stranded further afield from you final destination than you intended. You might also want to start thinking about booking with an airline that flies direct to your chosen destination rather than having to change planes and wait elsewhere for a transfer on the outward and inward journeys.
