Touring: Insurance
Chaos theory dictates that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Therefore insurance is absolutely essential for every trip whether you are travelling as part of an organised tour or independently. If something goes wrong, then a travel insurance policy will give you the peace of mind that the problem will be sorted with a minimum of fuss and more importantly paid for. Policies usually carry an excess charge before a claim can be made but this pails in insignificance compared to what it would cost to deal with some problems. Insurance can be bought as a single trip policy or as an annual trip policy, allowing you to travel as many times in a calendar year with a limit of 1 month for each trip's duration.

There is an often harrowing amount of companies from post offices, banks, building societies to travel agents who will all try to sell you their policy. The most important aspect of buying an insurance policy is ensuring that you have adequate medical expenses cover. This can cover you for hundreds of thousands of dollars and will give you the piece of mind that should an accident occur and leave you in need of urgent medical assistance, help will be at hand. Personal accident cover is also important as it covers the insured in the event of death, permanent total disablement and/or the loss of eyes and limbs.

Curtailment or cancellation insurance gives you the option of recovering the cost of a holiday in the event of having to cut short or completely abort a trip. Delayed departure cover on a policy means that you will get compensation if your flight or similar is delayed. It is also wise to purchase a policy that covers loss, theft and damage to personal property and money. If this occurs, normally an insurance company will require a theft loss report from the local police of the country that you are travelling in.

Extra cover can be taken out for those participating in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Insurance policies almost always exclude dangerous sporting activities like bungee jumping and parachuting. Very few insurance companies will cover in the event of hijack, war or civil disturbance.
