Touring: Women's Travel
Women should not be deterred from travelling alone in the world, although there are definitely a few precautions to take in order to avoid unpleasantness or even attack. In many countries of the developing world and even Eastern Europe, women are sometimes regarded as second-class citizens and treated accordingly. As a sole woman traveller there is no denying that the possibility for sexual harassment or attack is greater than if travelling as a part of a group.

Rape alarms do not reduce the risk of attack, although they do provide a means of attracting somebody's attention should an attack occur. Wearing the correct clothing helps to reduce the possibility of attracting unwanted attention. Long sleeves and long dresses or trousers are good examples of outfits to wear when travelling alone.

It is always best to make sure that hotel doors are locked before going to bed and to be suspicious of anybody that knocks late at night. Getting into a taxi with more than one male is not a good idea.
